Description
Backyard Football 2002 is where NFL legends were kids, the playbook was pure chaos, and the Cereal Bowl was everything.
I still remember the first time I drafted Barry Sanders in Backyard Football 2002, except he was three feet tall and wearing a backwards cap. That’s the magic of this game. Built by Humongous Entertainment, and running on the charming SCUMM engine, Backyard Football 2002 wasn’t trying to be Madden. It was trying to be fun. And it nailed it.
Draft Day Dreams
Every run began the same: pick a wacky coach name, choose your team colors, and dive into a draft that actually mattered. From future Hall of Famers like Brett Favre and Steve Young to series icons like Pablo Sanchez (the literal GOAT), every pick shaped your shot at reaching the Super Colossal Cereal Bowl. I built around speed and passing, Pete Wheeler on the slant, then sling it deep to Keisha Phillips. Untouchable.
Playgrounds With Personality
Games took place on muddy lots, snowy fields, or sun-baked sidewalks depending on the weather settings. Sunny days? Speed boost. Snow? Time to lean on your defense. And yes, you could even play online via LAN if your Windows or Mac setup was janky but connected.
Pure Backyard Brilliance
It wasn't just football for kids. This was football as kids dreamed it. Trick plays, power-ups, and cartoonish animations turned every match into a backyard epic. Even Single Game Mode felt like playoff football when Mediumville was the field and the difficulty was cranked to Hard.
I’ve played Backyard Baseball 2001, I’ve loved Backyard Football ‘99, but Backyard Football 2002? That was my Cereal Bowl champion.
